Good ol’ NETS. What immediately comes to mind when we think about NETS is keying your ATM PIN, Singapore’s very own payment mode which we grew up with and is still an essential part of our lives today. NETS and PIN (aka NETS Pin) has become synonymous with what the brand has to offer – we see it in use everywhere we go, from supermarkets to prata shops and departmental stores.

But herein lies a conundrum: most of us do not know much else about NETS beyond NETS Pin. NETS actually has a variety of cashless payment modes such as eNETS, NETS FlashPay, NETS QR and NETS Contactless ATM card to name a few. Today we’ll be talking about NETS Contactless ATM card, which makes retail purchases a breeze during checkout.

What is NETS Contactless ATM card?

As the name suggests, NETS Contactless ATM card allows you to go contactless and tap your ATM card for purchases under S$100 instead of entering your card PIN during payments. It’s fast, seamless, and secure — every contactless card contains a highly sophisticated chip which performs a wide range of functions to maintain the card’s security, and can interact safely with a contactless terminal.

NETS Contactless ATM card is accessible to the majority of residents in Singapore as it’s essentially your ATM card with an added contactless payment function. Tap away using your contactless card without having to worry about tracking your expenditure or incurring late payment charges since payment is directly debited from your bank account.

How do I identify a NETS Contactless ATM card?

  • Step 1: Reach for your purse or wallet and grab your ATM card
  • Step 2: Make sure you grab one from DBS, OCBC, POSB, UOB, HSBC or Maybank
  • Step 3: Look for the NETS tap icon on the face of the card

For DBS/POSB, OCBC and UOB, only the above cards are NETS tap-enabled.

For HSBC & Maybank, NETS Tap icon is located at the back of the card.

Where can I get a NETS Contactless ATM card?

Don’t see the NETS tap icon on your ATM card? You can upgrade to a NETS tap-enabled ATM card by visiting any branch from the participating banks namely DBS/POSB, UOB, OCBC, HSBC and Maybank.

NETS Contactless ATM Card – the one card for your ATM, retail and transit needs.

Enter the wonderful world of cashless payment — from making cash withdrawals at the ATM to making payment at the supermarket, your NETS tap-enabled ATM card is the card to rule them all. What’s more, with a SimplyGo account, it can be used for your transit needs too! Save the hassle of queuing to top up your card and have your travel and fare history at the tip of your fingers.

Who knew commuting could be this easy-breezy?

Do all merchants accept NETS tap payments?

If a merchant accepts NETS, it’s likely that NETS tap payments will be welcomed as well. After all, NETS has more than 120,000 acceptance points islandwide. To be safe, just check in with the merchant before making payment! Supermarkets such as NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong, Giant, Cold Storage, and health & beauty retailers such as Watsons and Guardian all accept NETS tap payments. Start enjoying the joy of seamless and secure checkouts today!

Tap to Pay and Win $50 Every Month

What’s more, from now to 31 December 2020, tap to pay with your NETS Contactless ATM card and stand to win $50 every month! Simply spend $30 and be automatically enrolled into the draw.

Bonus: Are you a NETS merchant? Look here!

Hi there, familiar one! Curious to ascertain if your NETS terminal accepts NETS tap payments? You might not be aware of it, but most of our terminals are already embedded with the NETS tap function. Look out for the NETS tap logo on your terminal and have your customers tap their NETS Contactless ATM cards. The payment process and transaction fees are the same as NETS Pin. It’s that simple!

If your NETS terminal doesn’t have a NETS tap icon, it’s time to upgrade it! Contact NETS at info@nets.com.sg to get a complimentary terminal/software upgrade or for any queries you might have.

Pssst: For new merchants, you will also enjoy a 3-month subscription fee waiver when you apply for NETS POS terminal online before 31 December 2020!

Aside from the explosion of rock music and big curls in the 80s, we were introduced to the cashless payment method called the General Interbank Recurring Order (GIRO). GIRO enabled its users to make convenient payments to billing organizations through their bank accounts. Since then, the digital cashless payment options have evolved dramatically. Nowadays, we can purchase items on online stores with a few taps of a button!

Let us get to know the nature and the examples of the e-wallets in Singapore.

HOW E-WALLETS WORK

Electronic wallets, e-wallets, digital wallets, or mobile wallets have taken over our lives in the previous months due to the effects of the global pandemic. E-wallets are virtual wallets, which are in collaboration with financial institutions (e.g., UOB or DBS), mobile service providers (e.g., SingTel), and international companies (e.g., Apple, Google, and Samsung). Many people have turned to cashless transactions to avoid carrying money or to avoid trips to the ATM.

E-wallets allow its users to store credit cards, debit cards, and loyalty cards into your device. Payments are made hassle-free as long as they are connected to your bank accounts or cards. Some e-wallets let you send and receive money through paperless transactions.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE USING AN E-WALLET

1. Which e-wallet do you want to get?

2. Does your preferred e-wallet have a maximum value that can be stored inside?

3. What is the expiry date for the money inside your potential e-wallet?

4. How much is the maximum value you can transfer out from an e-wallet per transaction?

Here are 10 things you need to know about Pfizer’s and Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccines

$
0
0

Just last week on Nov 9, Pfizer made known that its experimental COVID-19 vaccine was more than 90 per cent effective. Pfizer and German partner BioNTech are the first drugmakers to release such data. But fast forward to today, we have a new player in town and the name to note is Moderna. According to the company, its experimental vaccine is 94.5 per cent effective in preventing COVID-19.

With so much hype surrounding this topic, here are 10 things you need to know about Pfizer’s and Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccines.

Pfizer’s COVID-19 Vaccine

Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine

#1: More than 90 per cent effective

As we’ve briefly mentioned in the introduction, Pfizer’s vaccine is more than 90 per cent effective. This means that if 9 out of 10 people were to get the vaccine, they would attain immunity.

This is terrific news for many because previously, health experts have revealed that even a vaccine with an efficacy rating of between 60% to 70% would be a huge thing to rejoice for! Some governments were also ready to approve a vaccine if it only has a 50% efficacy rating.

But now, Pfizer is raising the stakes with a possible vaccine that could break the virus chain. In fact, Britain’s health minister Matt Hancock mentioned on Nov 16, “We’ll be ready to roll (the Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine) out as soon as it comes, we’ll be ready from the first of December…, but more likely is that we may be able to start rolling it out before Christmas.”

#2: Uncertainty on the period of effectiveness

While Pfizer’s vaccine is more than 90 per cent effective, no one knows how long it will be useful for. In other words, we have no idea how long the immunity gained from the vaccine can last us. It could be days, months, or years. Looking on the bright side, maybe it could be forever?

Another unknown factor is its successfulness on the profile of COVID-19 patients. There is little or no evidence that the vaccine works on COVID-19 severe cases, such as people who require hospitalisation for the virus.

#3: Vaccinated people may still carry the disease
asians wearing masks at a train station

Talking about uncertainty, there’s the variability that vaccinated people could still carry SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 and be infectious.

So even if one were to be injected with the vaccine and go about his or her day-to-day activities immune, he or she could still present a threat to others who aren’t vaccinated.

#4: Not a one-and-done deal

It will be delusional to think that it’s a one-shot all kill kind of super vaccine. A person will need at least two doses of the vaccine with a period of three weeks apart.

This could pose potential logistical and supply chain problems because supposedly everyone on earth requires that vaccine, then Pfizer will need to supply about 15 billion doses to meet the demand.

#5: Waiting time needed to get the vaccines

All good things must wait? Well, the economy is looking up for selected countries with the announcement of Pfizer’s initial trial results.

If approved, only 50 million doses would be available by the end of 2020. There’s also an estimate that only 1.3 billion quantities will be ready by the end of 2021. Mind you; there’s an estimate of 7.8 billion people in the world. With double doses needed, the supply vastly falls short.

Also, the need to store the vaccine at temperatures of -70°C or below poses a challenge for some countries, for example, in Asia, Africa, and Latin America who are already battling intense heat.

Moderna’s COVID-19 Vaccine

Moderna COVID-19 vaccine

#6: Has a 94.5 per cent efficacy rate

Based on an interim data from a late-stage trial, Moderna said on Nov 16 that its experimental vaccine is 94.5 per cent effective in preventing COVID-19. This makes them the second US drugmaker to report such outstanding results.

But it’s important to note that the announced rating came after studying only 95 participants out of a total of 30,000 participants. While a little hope keeps the world going, it’s essential to wait for the updated results from the ongoing phase three trial. The outcome can overturn within a few days.

#7: At least two doses of the vaccine needed

If you’ve read the article in full, you would have known that Moderna’s vaccine is similar to Pfizer’s in terms of the doses needed. There will be a few weeks of waiting time required between the first and second shot.

A news report has it that after taking the second dose, a notable proportion of volunteers went through severe aches and pains. To be exact, 10 per cent experienced fatigue that interfered with their daily activities, while another 9 per cent had severe body aches. In response, Moderna feedback that the symptoms were short-lived.

#8: Questions about safety linger
man taking a vaccine

Similar to Pfizer’s, Moderna’s vaccine may have potential red flags. Apart from the side effects, as stated above, the public is not yet sure if there are other more severe consequences. For example, there is one possibility that it might cause cancer in the future.

BBC News reported that there are no significant safety concerns at the moment but highlights that nothing is 100% safe. But having said that, the public has nothing to worry about as Moderna can only apply for the US emergency use authorisation (EUA) after a two-month follow-up safety data.

#9: Does not require extreme cold storage

Compared to Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine which needs to thrive at extremely low temperatures, Moderna’s can be stored at just -20°C during shipping.

In terms of shipping logistics and distribution, Moderna’s vaccine is much more well-positioned. Once it reaches a distribution centre, the vaccine can be defrosted and stored for up to 30 days in a refrigerator at only 2°C to 8°C. Thus, overcoming one of the most significant limitations of Pfizer’s.

#10: Distribution may start as soon as next month

If the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) grants Moderna EUA for the vaccine, Americans would probably be in line to get their first vaccination by December. At the time of writing, Pfizer has launched a pilot delivery programme for its experimental COVID-19 vaccine in New Mexico, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Texas.

However, even if Moderna has no green light, at least 20 million doses will still be available in December. This means that about 10 million people, most likely front-line healthcare workers, will receive the vaccine shots.

5 Habits That Drain Your Wallet

$

0

A habit is defined as a settled tendency or a usual manner of behavior. Whether you take daily morning walks or sip a cup of coffee at noon, your habits become nearly or completely involuntary as time passes.

The key to developing healthy habits that float well with your finances is moderation. If you are indulging too often on a habit, cutting back may save you money and protect your health. Below are just some of the habits that can drain your wallet.

SMOKING CIGARETTES

Smoking raises your risks of serious health problems such as stroke, heart disease, emphysema, and cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking cigarettes harms nearly every organ of one’s body. Take care of your health by reducing or eliminating your smoking habit.

Let us start with the average cost of a cigarette. Last year, the average retail price for a 20-stick pack of cigarettes in Singapore was at S$13.08. A pack-a-day habit will run you about S$4774.02 a year. Imagine the amount of money you can save or invest in a span of 12 months!

Quitting smoking cancels out the costs for your finances and your health. However, it is easier said than done. There are several ways to quit smoking such as Cold Turkey and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Cold Turkey entails that you stop all at once. According to WebMD, about 90% of smokers who try to quit choose this method. Unfortunately, many of them do not succeed. Using this method may put your body into a state of nicotine withdrawal. Let us focus on the other method. The Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) uses the power of your thoughts, feelings, and mental processing in order to reduce your smoking habit. This works best with people who are open to counselling and psychotherapy.

EATING OUT DAILY

Eating out regularly, especially indulging on fast food, is not the healthiest habit out there. It is simply hard to resist! This is due to the convenience and familiarity attached to fast food chains and restaurants. After an exhausting day at work, we just want to relax at home and not spend more time for cooking dinner. It is a lot easier to order a box of pizza or a bowl of ramen with a few taps on an app!

Despite the great deals that fast food chains offer, eating out is more expensive than cooking your own food. A five-dollar meal may not seem expensive, but the costs add up. If you eat out on a daily basis, you can consume about S$35 to S$100 in a week. Reduce your spending by planning your meals ahead of time and preparing on-the-go snacks (e.g., sliced apples or fruit-filled yogurts).

DRINKING ARTISAN COFFEE

Consumed on a daily basis, artisan and gourmet coffees can get expensive. For many people, drinking a cup of joe in the morning seems like second-nature. They wake up and smell coffee. I have several friends who cannot function properly in the morning without having their cup of coffee. And it is not just the smell that wakes them up. It is the caffeine.

It may seem relatively cheap to spend a few bucks a day at a local coffee shop. However, you must consider all the money that you could have saved if you brewed your own coffee at home.

REGULAR GROCERY SHOPPING

Some people have a habit of shopping for groceries on a daily basis. A good way to ensure that you stick to your grocery budget is to restrict yourself to one grocery trip per week. Frequent trips to the grocery store throughout the week can make you tempted to buy more than what you need. Making a routine of hitting up the grocery whenever you forget something indicates that you do not have a proper grasp of your consumption. It is best to plan ahead!

Avoid grocery shopping when you are hungry or when you have an ample amount of time to spare. People are more susceptible to purchasing additional items when they are hungry or when they go for leisurely shopping. These unnecessary items usually go to waste.

CONSUMING ENERGY DRINKS

People who have a tendency to purchase a bottle of energy drink everyday may develop a tolerance towards it. Chances are, you will need to drink more than a bottle per day to keep you buzzed all throughout. That can cost you more than .50 cents a day. Is it time for you to kick out your energy drink habit?

If you need the energy drink to keep you active throughout the day in compensation of sleep deprivation then, you need to alter your sleeping habits. You will not feel exhausted at work with a full cycle of sleep. If fatigue persists, you may consult a doctor.

The ten dishes are as follows:

Crispy Duck with Dried Chillies

The Crispy Duck with Dried Chillies 香酥鸭 (S$15.90) is made using fresh duck, which is deboned by hand in the kitchen. This ensures that the flesh remains tender and is convenient to eat. The meat is cut into strips, then deep-fried until crispy before it is stir-fried with chillies from Yunnan’s Qiubei county and crispy broad beans. Broad beans are a speciality produce from Yunnan. This dish is fragrant, spicy and extremely appetising, and marks the first time YUNNANS is offering a duck mainstay.

Poached Seabass in Spicy Pickled Vegetable Broth

The Poached Seabass in Spicy Pickled Vegetable Broth 老坛酸菜鱼(S$28.90) showcases Yunnan’s mustard greens. A duo of pickled vegetables is used to achieve a winning combination of flavours. The pickled vegetables are fried with pickled chillies and freshly ground fresh chillies for a piquant soup base, then cooked with ingredients such as seabass, sweet potato flour sticks and tofu. This is a very moreish dish that goes well with rice.

Beancurd skin is a speciality of Yunnan, and there it is made with Shiping County’s well water without any additives. Enjoy the beancurd skin in its most natural state with the Stir Fried Dragon Chives with Yunnan Beancurd Skin 云南豆皮炒青龙菜 (S$12.90). The delicateness of the beancurd sheet is enlivened by the natural sweetness of the dragon chives. Next is the Charcoal Grilled Wheat Pumpkin 烤云南小麦瓜 ($7.90) – wheat pumpkin is endemic to Yunnan, and it has a texture that is a cross between pumpkin’s and gourd’s. The wheat pumpkin is specially air-flown to Singapore. Grilling brings out its natural sweetness, and the fruit is served with a sprinkling of special Yunnan spice mix.

Its fragrance wafting through the air when served, the Stir Fried Yunnan Rice Noodles with Assorted Seafood 海鲜虾汤炒米线 (S$12.90) is made with YUN NANS’ signature prawn broth. Yunnan’s famous rice noodles are stir-fried with an assortment of fresh seafood such as squid and prawns. This dish is full of umami flavour. Nourishing and delicious, the Steam Pot Chicken Soup with Yunnan Red Mushrooms (Single Portion)大红菌汽锅鸡 (S$13.90) is brewed using a unique technique that does not require any drop of water. The black feet chicken, along with wild red mushrooms from Yunnan, are pressure-steamed for three hours. Clear with no hint of greasiness, the soup has a slightly red hue, and boasts the added fragrance of mushrooms.

Pork lovers will certainly enjoy the next two dishes. A popular appetiser, the Deep Fried Pork Fillet with Homemade Spicy Dip 香炸小酥肉 (S$9.90) features marinated pork that is deep-fried till golden and crunchy. Each piece of meat pairs impeccably with a green dip that is widely enjoyed in Yunnan, which has a sour-spicy note. Another lip-smacking dish is the Stir Fried Pork Collar with Scallions 三葱猪颈肉 (S$16.90). Shallots, spring onions and leeks are flash fried under high heat to bring out their fragrance, before they are stir-fried with pork collar. All it needs is an accompaniment of hot, fluffy rice.

High in nutritional value and rich in collagen, the Sautéed Asparagus with Golden Fungus and Mushroom 金耳花菇炒芦笋 (S$14.90) pleases with the crunchiness of asparagus and silky chewiness of the mushrooms. Golden fungus is a wild fungus that is found in Yunnan highlands. This dish is good for complexion and helps to strengthen immunity.

Cap off the session with the Brown Sugar Jelly Served with Rose Puree 玫瑰红糖冰粉 (S$6.90). This local street snack in Yunnan is a must-have every summer. The jelly is made in-house, and paired with YUN NANS’s house-made rose petal puree and hand-fried brown sugar. The hand-fried brown sugar comes from Yunnan and is fried together with local gula melaka to give it a full-bodied caramelised flavour, then boiled down to make the brown sugar syrup that coats the jelly.

How To Identify And Treat Depression In Young Adults And Teenagers?

$
0
0

As parents, we have often dismissed the problems our kids are facing on a routine basis. We tend to compare our problems, whether it be financial or otherwise with theirs. Teenage breakups, exam stresses, and so on, somehow do not warrant the same attention and focus as adult problems do.

However, nothing can be further from the truth. Leading psychologists point out that parents should never consider or compare their problems to their children’s’. This is because not only is the context different, but also the experience.

In this article, we speak to a depression therapist from In Focus, a leading firm specializing in teenage depression. We ask them some reasons for the same and how we can help someone who is going through it.

Depression in Young Adults: Does it need attention?

Yes, it does! In the past decade or so, the lives of teens have gotten that much complicated. Whether it is the advent of social media or the stresses in educational curriculums, everything seems to be much amplified than it was a few decades back.

However, what has changed is that the severity of the issue is now forcing young adults to look for remedies themselves. These remedies are not positive in any sense of the way. From engaging in actions like social media stalking to falling on intoxicants and other drugs, young adults, who are suffering from mental health issues need attention.

The entire digital and information ecosystem is such that issues of mental health are often judged upon. Sometimes, the judgment can start from the supposed safe confines of the home itself. Statements like ‘man-up’, ‘it will pass’, and ‘stop acting like a girl’, do a lot more harm than they do good. Depression in teenagers exists!

Why Young Adults are more Hesitant to open up about Mental Health Issues?

If you compare your maturity now to the same when you were fifteen, you will see how far you have come. For the benefit of everyone, let us list down some reasons why young adults are hesitant when it comes to discussing mental health issues-

  1. Equating Depression with Weakness-

Nobody wants to come across as weak. This is as true of adults as it is for teenagers. The entire discourse on mental health has been created in such a manner that feeling hopeless, not getting sleep, and being anxious is read as being weak. This leads a majority of young adults to hide their feelings in a cooped-up fashion over a long period of time.

  1. Fear of being Judged by Outsiders-

What happens when someone comes to know you are suffering from mental health issues? In teenage circles, you are ridiculed and isolated. No one wants to hang around you as they feel you are not cool enough. This is another reason why teenagers, who are strongly driven by peer pressure do not open up to mental health conversations.

  1. Lack of Resources for Addressing Depression concerns-

Therapy and counseling sessions do not come cheap. In other words, pocket money cannot pay off for the same. Even if teenagers realize that they have a problem, it is very difficult for them to address it on their own. They need money, access to the right therapists, doing research, changing habits, and so on. Without maturity or money, the task becomes literally impossible.

The Final Word

As a parent, we need to remember how we would get depressed and anxious about incidents in our teenage years. Teenage and young adults face mental health issues in the same way as adults do. Their reasons for the same might be different, but everything else remains the same.

What might appear trivial for a parent, might be the one thing, a teenager’s life revolves around. While it is good that we let our kids learn from experiences and mature, sometimes, they too need a helping hand.

Mental health issues like depression or anxiety are not something, which should be taken lightly. It is important that parents initiate conversations and healthy non-judgmental discussions on such issues. This will make the children open up about the same, leading both parents and teenagers to successfully address them.
